Peonies are beautiful, spring flowering plants with a wide range of colours. They have been known to live for 100 years or more and require very little maintenance.
A well draining soil with full sun is all it takes, and they even relish cold winters which aid in bud formation.
The bulbs need a generously sized hole when planting but they don’t like to be planted too deeply. Two feet deep and across should be fine with eyes facing upward and finishing around 2 inches below the surface.
If you have sandy soil they will benefit from the addition of organic material and compost.
We have the deep, blood red ‘Buckeyed Belle’, a pure white ‘Bowl of Cream’, and an intense coral/rose ‘Coral Sunset’. All double flowers and all stunning in the spring, early summer.
